Back then ...I really love that old box art as well. Back then my choice of games I rented was based almost entirely either on an established license I was interested in, or the box art. One that always stood out to me was Ninja Gaiden. I took one look at that box art and knew I had to have it, and thankfully so, as it is one of my favorite games to this day. Of course, like you said Castlevania always had great artwork as well. I always loved looking at the TMNT box arts too. One of my favorite SNES box arts is Chrono Trigger, again one of my favorite games. There are so many games I love from back then that I likely would never had played if it weren't for the box art.

Another thing I miss almost or just as much as cool box art is well done instruction manuals. I loved just flipping through them looking at the artwork. I always particularly liked seeing what enemies and stuff were actually supposed to look like. Plus, they had storylines and descriptions of characters, enemies and items that I always enjoyed reading. Now you are lucky to get a two page piece of paper that just tells you the controls.

I guess with the internet box art isn't as important these days since you can find out all about a game before you even go to the store. One of the things I hate about many modern box arts is that they seem to follow the same few templates for the most part. A guy standing there with a gun pointed in the air, maybe some explosions behind him. Or a giant head (often yelling), or two big heads angrily staring at each other. Or three characters in a row, or simply a character render on a white background. Great box art may not be as much of a necessity these days, but I sure miss it.koopzillahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06995772633304568494noreply@blogger.com
