Oh I've seen it played at places but never got chance to watch it til a few days ago. Amazed at level of detail that went in to it and I do agree it is one that should be seen by everyone. Am amazed at all the work that went into the sets on the original. I'm curious to watch the Netflix series but agree it relies heavily too much on CGI. The first one I remember ever seeing was Godzilla 1985 (which saddens me even more that it still hasn't been released on DVD). A local channel used to show them all the time on weekend nights and early in the morning, which is where I saw most of them for the first time. It's hard to believe it's been nearly a decade since Toho made Godzilla Final Wars, in which I took great pleasure watching Godzilla completely destroy "Zilla" (Godzilla from the American film) in like 10 seconds. I am looking forward to seeing the new American Godzilla, they seem to have been more respectful of the series. At the very least it wasn't tainted by Roland Emmerich or Michael Bay which gives me some hope. I am ready for the very real possibility that it could be terrible though. Even if it is really good, I hope to see Toho continue making new movies in the future.koopzillahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06995772633304568494noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4778893551955833444.post-10953977793643950672014-04-29T23:55:04.210-07:002014-04-29T23:55:04.210-07:00continued...
Capcom is the same story. Almost eve...continued...

Capcom is the same story. Almost everything they made was good before it all went to shit. They completely ignore all their best franchises. They turned Resident Evil into a crappy action game with no horror to be found. They are obsessed with DLC. They now appear to be obsessed with mobile phone games. They nearly went bankrupt a while back and made a bunch of money off Monster Hunter 3, then like the dumb asses they are they turn around and invest all that money in a mobile phone game development studio. I will say Street Fighter 4 is good, but that's because it is basically Street Fighter 2 with updated graphics, not much can go wrong with that.

Then there's Rare. Perhaps the worst of all of them. Theres not much to say other than I lay the blame solely on Microsoft for that. Once they were bought out by Microsoft they immediately went from one of the best developers to one of the worst overnight. They are now relegated to making crappy Kinect games and X-Box Avatars. They apparently can't even be trusted with their own franchises. Microsoft had more faith in Double Helix (not exactly known for their excellent games) to make Killer Instinct than Rare.

I hate to sound so negative, but it just sucks what has happened to these companies in recent years. You have this group that calls themselves the "hardcore gamers" that have all these companies convinced that the only thing people want is first person shooters and sports games. Budgets are out of control, they can hardly make a profit because everything has to be bleeding edge technology. Risks can not be taken, new ideas are out of the question. Games are released in an unfinished state, and portions of the game are taken out to charge you more money for later. And the most undeserving companies that release the same crappy game year after year are rolling in cash (EA). It's sad to see where this is all heading. It's really looking like indie developers are the future of video games. Plus, I will always have my retro games.koopzillahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06995772633304568494noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4778893551955833444.post-29958590397219247472014-04-29T23:53:53.120-07:002014-04-29T23:53:53.120-07:00Man, this is a topic that just really saddens me. ...Man, this is a topic that just really saddens me. Like you, Nintendo is and has always been my favorite ever since I first laid hands on the NES. And like you said they are pretty much the only company that still consistently makes great games. I would be hard pressed to come up with a top 5 companies now. I would probably say Nintendo, Sega, WayForward, Namco, and... I don't even know, maybe I would just leave #2 blank to signify the huge gap between Nintendo and any other company.

It wasn't always this way though, back during the 16 bit era I could have easily come up with a top ten. Squaresoft, Capcom, Konami, and Rare have fallen particularly hard though. These were companies I didn't think could do any wrong at some point. Then there were others that were really good like you said. Companies like Tecmo, Sunsoft, Hudson, Midway, Data East, SNK, etc. that made a lot of good games, most of them are out of business, or swallowed up by another company who ruined them, or are just mediocre now.

Squaresoft was easily my second favorite company back then. I don't think they made a bad game during the 16 it era. I even bought a Playstation the day Final Fantasy 7 came out, before that I had no plans of ever buying one. In fact probably 75% of all my Playstation games are made by Squaresoft. They made some great games up through that generation, like Final Fantasy 9, Parasite Eve, Threads of Fate, Final Fantasy Tactics and even Chrono Cross (while not even comparable to Chrono Trigger, was still a fun game). They had pretty much never let me down (except maybe Vagrant Story which I didn't like at all). That all changed when Final Fantasy 10 came out though. Like with 7 I bought a PS2 the day it came out. To be quite frank, I was disgusted at how bad that game was, so much so I regretted even buying a PS2. I have a handful of good games for it now, but it is not one of my favorite systems by a long shot. Then they continued downhill after that, FF11 was a damn MMORPG, 12 was no good, and they just keep getting worse. They only seem to care about graphics now, with no thought put into making a good game. They have tried to cater to western gamers and even bought up some western developers instead of doing what they did best. The only ray of light with them is their handheld division which has released some great games in recent years. Bravely Default is literally the best RPG I have played in ages. And they made the boneheaded decision to not even release that outside of Japan, luckily Nintendo stepped in and released it. They have stated they have learned from the success of that game, but I will believe that when I see it.

Konami, I don't know what the hell happened to them. They don't even make any good games anymore. They have absolutely ruined one of my favorite franchises, Castlevania, by giving it to Mercury Steam to make those horrible Lords of Shadow games. Everything else they made is just ignored (which maybe is for the best I guess). The only thing I know of that they make besides those shitty Lords of Shadow games is some soccer game and Metal Gear, which I never liked despite trying several games in the series in the hopes I would like it (plus I think Kojima is a pompous asshole). They also bought out Hudson and have done nothing with that which is another strike against them.koopzillahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06995772633304568494noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4778893551955833444.post-89628884993782352512014-04-29T22:38:16.423-07:002014-04-29T22:38:16.423-07:00Nice list, I agree with most of it. I didn't care for Actraiser, but it's just something I rented back in the day and haven't played since, I should give it another try sometime. I would probably replace that with Chrono Trigger, it doesn't matter how many times I play that game it never gets old to me. I would put the Zelda series higher and my favorite is Link To The Past. Final Fantasy 3 (6) is my favorite in the series, 4 would probably be my second favorite. I personally like MegaMan 3 the best, but they are all good, it pretty much comes down to the one I spent the most time playing as a kid. Super Castlevania 4 is also my favorite, but I will point out that I absolutely love Castlevania 2, even though it gets so much hate. And Street Fighter is hands down the best Fighting game ever made as far as I'm concerned, it destroys the extremely overrated Mortal Kombat. I would probably have to squeeze the original Ninja Gaiden in there. I would also probably put Rygar on there somewhere, I love that game.koopzillahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06995772633304568494noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4778893551955833444.post-52126651516269982152014-04-29T22:16:01.657-07:002014-04-29T22:16:01.657-07:00I remember Brett the Hitman Hart more from the Har...I remember Brett the Hitman Hart more from the Hart Foundation. Back then ...I really love that old box art as well. Back then my choice of games I rented was based almost entirely either on an established license I was interested in, or the box art. One that always stood out to me was Ninja Gaiden. I took one look at that box art and knew I had to have it, and thankfully so, as it is one of my favorite games to this day. Of course, like you said Castlevania always had great artwork as well. I always loved looking at the TMNT box arts too. One of my favorite SNES box arts is Chrono Trigger, again one of my favorite games. There are so many games I love from back then that I likely would never had played if it weren't for the box art.

Another thing I miss almost or just as much as cool box art is well done instruction manuals. I loved just flipping through them looking at the artwork. I always particularly liked seeing what enemies and stuff were actually supposed to look like. Plus, they had storylines and descriptions of characters, enemies and items that I always enjoyed reading. Now you are lucky to get a two page piece of paper that just tells you the controls.

I guess with the internet box art isn't as important these days since you can find out all about a game before you even go to the store. One of the things I hate about many modern box arts is that they seem to follow the same few templates for the most part. A guy standing there with a gun pointed in the air, maybe some explosions behind him. Or a giant head (often yelling), or two big heads angrily staring at each other. Or three characters in a row, or simply a character render on a white background. Great box art may not be as much of a necessity these days, but I sure miss it.koopzillahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06995772633304568494noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4778893551955833444.post-44802821012100841562014-03-13T21:07:19.968-07:002014-03-13T21:07:19.968-07:00Thanks man!
